Joy Bombs in the Psalms: Dry Bones Edition | Psalm 150, Psalm 34:1-20

I was listening to a song called Reckless Love and I thought of you and how we’ve been talking about dry bones this week. God can breathe new life into us, into our bones and our hearts… Just like he revived a valley filled with dry bones and turned it into a living army. I have such joy because I love studying God’s Word with you, especially on Fridays with Joy Bombs in the Psalms. So, join me right now, as we open up Psalm 150.

I was listening to a song called Reckless Love and I thought of you and how we’ve been talking about dry bones this week and how God can breathe new life into us and our bones and our hearts. Just like he revived a valley filled with dry bones and turned it into a living army. And this was the line in the song that got me:

Before I spoke a word, you breathed your life in me.

Oh man, he can do this for us right now. He is responsible for every breath you and I will ever breathe. Hi, it’s Erica. Welcome to the Bible for Busy People. If you hear the joy in my voice, it’s because I love studying God’s Word with you, especially on Fridays because Fridays are when we celebrate Joy Bombs in the Psalms. So, join me right now. We’re going to open up Psalm 150 and we’re going to begin in verse one.

Hallelujah! Praise God in his holy house of worship, praise him under the open skies; Praise him for his acts of power, praise him for his magnificent greatness; Praise with a blast on the trumpet, praise by strumming soft strings; Praise him with castanets…

I don’t know what those are.

and dance, praise him with banjo and flute; Praise him with cymbals and a big bass drum, praise him with fiddles and mandolin.

And my favorite line.

Let every living, breathing creature praise God! Hallelujah!

Amen, right? I mean you and I have breath in our bodies and we can give it back to God as a way of saying thank you. Thank you for creating us in the first place, for thinking us up. Thank you in advance for refreshing us and reviving us by the power of your Holy Spirit. Thank you God. This is Thank you God Day on the Bible for Busy People. We’re going to scoot over to one more Psalm today. This is actually Psalm 34, and we’re going to continue to praise, continue to give our breath back to God and just pause in our day and just say, we are alive right now because of our great and wonderful and mighty and tender and loving God. We’re just taking a moment today to celebrate that, right? It’s amazing. You and I are miracles if you study the human body. It’s astounding to think of all of the things that have to work to keep us breathing; to keep our hearts beating. If you’ve got a pulse today, you’ve got a purpose. The Lord Jesus is not finished with you. And remember, it is okay to be a work in progress and a masterpiece at the same time. He’s working on you and it’s beautiful. Alright, Psalm 34 beginning in verse one.

I bless God every chance I get; my lungs expand with his praise. 2 I live and breathe God;

Don’t you want to do that? I want to live and breathe God.

if things aren’t going well, hear this and be happy: 3 Join me in spreading the news; together let’s get the word out. 4 God met me more than halfway, he freed me from my anxious fears. 5 Look at him; give him your warmest smile. Never hide your feelings from him.

By the way, we are reading the Message version of the Bible today, which I enjoy from time to time.

When I was desperate, I called out, and God got me out of a tight spot. 7 God’s angel sets up a circle of protection around us while we pray. 8 Open your mouth and taste, open your eyes and see— how good God is. Blessed are you who run to him.

If you are running to God today because you’ve messed up and you’re like, Lord, I’m so sorry. If you’re running to him today because you’ll love him and you’re just thanking him like I am. I’m in that space today, you are blessed. We are blessed. Worship God if you want the best. Worship opens doors to all his goodness. Woo. Oh my word. What we’re doing right now, honoring him and worshiping him. It opens the doors to all his goodness. You can almost feel it in your bones. You can feel His Holy Spirit just coursing through you right now. I believe it. I’m feeling it as I say these words out loud. He’s alive in us. Remember, I repeat it often for a reason because I want to remember too, the spirit of the living God that rose Jesus from the dead is alive in us. So, if you’re feeling dead inside, just soak up these words because you can feel alive. Okay?

Young lions on the prowl get hungry, but God-seekers are full of God. 11 Come, children, listen closely; I’ll give you a lesson in God worship. 12 Who out there has a lust for life? Can’t wait each day to come upon beauty? 13 Guard your tongue from profanity, and no more lying through your teeth. 14 Turn your back on sin; do something good. Embrace peace—don’t let it get away! 15 God keeps an eye on his friends, his ears pick up every moan and groan. 16 God won’t put up with rebels; he’ll cull them from the pack. 17 Is anyone crying for help? God is listening, ready to rescue you. 18 If your heart is broken, you’ll find God right there; if you’re kicked in the gut, he’ll help you catch your breath. 19 Disciples so often get into trouble; still, God is there every time. 20 He’s your bodyguard, shielding every bone; not even a finger gets broken.

Wow, this is a powerful Psalm. You and I are God seekers. That’s what we’ve been doing here these past few minutes. We’ve been seeking God and we are now full of God. Like after a full meal. We are satisfied in him.

Lord Jesus. We use the breath in our lungs to give you thanks and praise for another week together. We celebrate you. We honor you. We ask you to open the doors of your goodness in our lives. Let us walk through. We praise you, Lord Jesus, for it’s in your name we pray. Amen.

Alright, until next time, you are so loved.
