Then as I looked, I saw a door standing open in heaven.
Don’t you want to walk through this door with me? Hi. It’s the Bible for Busy People. I’m your host Erica, and I’m excited to walk through this door with you. The Apostle John, I don’t know if you know his story, but after Jesus died and rose again, years later he was exiled to the island of Patmos and there God met him and gave him many visions of the future. We are going to experience one of those visions together today in moments, as we go to Revelation chapter four. But first I want to say you and I have been talking about what worship looks like here on earth this week so far. And in moments we’re going to peek into the window of heaven and experience what worship is like there. I believe you and I are going to feel the good goosebumps, the ones that come from the Holy Ghost as you and I walk through this beautiful door with John the Apostle Revelation four. Now beginning in verse one.
Then as I looked, I saw a door standing open in heaven, and the same voice I had heard before spoke to me like a trumpet blast. The voice said, “Come up here, and I will show you what must happen after this.” 2 And instantly I was in the Spirit,
This is John writing now.
and I saw a throne in heaven and someone sitting on it.
Get ready for the good chills.
The one sitting on the throne was as brilliant as gemstones—like jasper and carnelian. And the glow of an emerald circled his throne like a rainbow. 4 Twenty-four thrones surrounded him, and twenty-four elders sat on them. They were all clothed in white and had gold crowns on their heads. 5 From the throne came flashes of lightning and the rumble of thunder. And in front of the throne were seven torches with burning flames. This is the sevenfold Spirit of God.
The mystery, right? The wonder verse six now.
In front of the throne was a shiny sea of glass, sparkling like crystal. In the center and around the throne were four living beings, each covered with eyes, front and back. 7 The first of these living beings was like a lion; the second was like an ox; the third had a human face; and the fourth was like an eagle in flight. 8 Each of these living beings had six wings, and their wings were covered all over with eyes, inside and out. Day after day and night after night they keep on saying, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God, the Almighty— the one who always was, who is, and who is still to come.” 9 Whenever the living beings give glory and honor and thanks to the one sitting on the throne (the one who lives forever and ever), 10 the twenty-four elders fall down and worship the one sitting on the throne (the one who lives forever and ever). And they lay their crowns before the throne and say, 11 “You are worthy, O Lord our God, to receive glory and honor and power. For you created all things, and they exist because you created what you pleased.”
Do you realize just reading that out loud and hearing it, that God was pleased to create you? I disappoint myself a lot. I get caught up in my mistakes and I whip up my thoughts into a frenzy and I obsess over them. But you know what? God forgives me when I mess up. He forgives you when you mess up and he doesn’t hold it against us. Corrie Ten Boom, one of my favorite people who ever lived, she actually hid the Jewish people during World War II, one of my absolute heroes. If you’ve never read her book, The Hiding Place, couldn’t recommend it more highly. Share it with a child in your life to inspire them, encourage them to write a book report about it. But Corrie says, “God buries our sins in the depths of the sea.” Of course, when we ask to be forgiven of them, and he puts up a sign that says, no fishing. So, when you mess up, remember God is not displeased with you. He understands that we are dust. I believe it says that in Psalm 103. He understands that we’re going to fail and mess up, but he picks us up like the good Father he is. He dusts us off and he says, go try again. I love you still. He was pleased to create you. I know you’re not perfect. I am so not perfect either, but just take a moment and cherish the love God has for you right now. He made you on purpose, for a purpose. Alright, I want to jump over to Revelation chapter 14 now and we’re going to catch another vision with the Apostle John.
Then I saw the Lamb standing on Mount Zion, and with him were 144,000 who had his name and his Father’s name written on their foreheads. 2 And I heard a sound from heaven like the roar of mighty ocean waves or the rolling of loud thunder. It was like the sound of many harpists playing together. 3 This great choir sang a wonderful new song in front of the throne of God and before the four living beings and the twenty-four elders. No one could learn this song except the 144,000 who had been redeemed from the earth. 4 They have kept themselves as pure as virgins, following the Lamb wherever he goes. They have been purchased from among the people on the earth as a special offering to God and to the Lamb. 5 They have told no lies; they are without blame.
Don’t you want to follow the lamb, the lamb of God, wherever he goes? Me too. And today, whatever you’re going through, I want to encourage you to look back with me at verse eight. In Revelation chapter four. I want you to say these words with me. Maybe you could open your Bible. Maybe you could quickly Google Revelation chapter four on your phone. Here are the words. Let’s say them together. Let’s worship together.
“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God, the Almighty— the one who always was, who is, and who is still to come.”
