If you’re having a hard time catching your breath today or even just taking a nice deep breath because life is crazy, or circumstances are pressing upon you, I would love to be the voice that reminds you today that you have the breath of God living in you. He’s the God who made a valley of dry bones come to life and turn into a living, breathing army. Hi, it’s the Bible for Busy People. I’m so glad you’re here, as we continue our series on dry bones. I’m Erica, your host, and today we’re going back to the day that God created people. When we have problems with our cars or our teeth, we know who to go to, the mechanic, the dentist… We know who’s going to take care of us. We have a maker. When something is wrong or we’re not operating right, we know who and what to go to. Our maker and His manual, the Bible. What do you say? We go all the way back to the beginning today, the first book of the Bible, Genesis chapter two, beginning in verse four,

When the Lord God made the earth and the heavens, 5 neither wild plants nor grains were growing on the earth. For the Lord God had not yet sent rain to water the earth, and there were no people to cultivate the soil. 6 Instead, springs came up from the ground and watered all the land. 7 Then the Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground. He breathed the breath of life into the man’s nostrils, and the man became a living person.

I want to pitch a small tent here because if God did that in the beginning, is there any reason he can’t do that right now? By the power of His Holy Spirit, he can give you a nice deep breath. He can breathe new life into your gasping lungs right now. I just want you to know that he’s the same God who made Adam in this moment. He’s the same God who made you and me and he is taking care of us. Alright, we’re going to jump down to verse 18 now.

Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him.” 19 So the Lord God formed from the ground all the wild animals and all the birds of the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would call them, and the man chose a name for each one. 20 He gave names to all the livestock, all the birds of the sky, and all the wild animals. But still there was no helper just right for him. 21 So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep. While the man slept, the Lord God took out one of the man’s ribs and closed up the opening. 22 Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib, and he brought her to the man. 23 “At last!” the man exclaimed.“This one is bone from my bone, and flesh from my flesh! She will be called ‘woman,’ because she was taken from ‘man.’” 24 This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one. 25 Now the man and his wife were both naked, but they felt no shame.

I always think that such a remarkable sentence at the end of that powerful story, they were naked and they felt no shame. That’s how God made us with breath, with bone. He’s so cool. God is the ultimate artist, creator and maker. He knows everything that we need. He knows how to care for his creations. If you have a plant in your house, or a dog or a cat, you know what it’s like being a caregiver. These things depend on you. Think about how much more God cares for us, his children, the people he literally breathed into existence. He gave us the breath of life and he remembers. Join me now in Psalm 103 beginning in verse 13.

The Lord is like a father to his children, tender and compassionate to those who fear him. 14 For he knows how weak we are; he remembers we are only dust. 15 Our days on earth are like grass; like wildflowers, we bloom and die. 16 The wind blows, and we are gone— as though we had never been here. 17 But the love of the Lord remains forever with those who fear him.

We are dust. We were made from dust and yet he loves us. Yet Jesus says in his Word that he goes to prepare a place for us. He is our father. We are his children. He knows that we can be a mess sometimes, if not most of the time, but he’s telling us here that he is tender and compassionate with us. In Isaiah, our friend, the prophet. We’ve been hanging out with him this week in chapter 54 of his book in the Bible. I believe it’s verse five. I’m just checking here. Yes, verse five, listen to what Isaiah says about your Maker.

For your Creator will be your husband; the Lord of Heaven’s Armies is his name! He is your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel, the God of all the earth.

I just wanted to take a second today and remember with you that you and I are dust and yet we’re loved. We have a God who made us. He gave us breath and we can use it today to praise him. Psalm 147 tells us something else about God as we consider and ponder his tenderness and compassion toward us today. Psalm 147 says in verse three,

He heals the brokenhearted and bandages their wounds.

If your heart is broken, take it to your maker today. If you have a wound that is open and bleeding, let him dress it. He wants to. Sit in his presence. It’s exactly what you’re doing right now. You’re opening your heart to his word. He can heal your heart. He can give you a nice deep breath. He can rejuvenate you, revive you, restore you. This is our God. He is our creator, our husband, the Lord of heaven’s armies, our redeemer, the holy one of Israel, the God of all the earth. But I think most beautifully our father, we are his children. He loves us even though we’re dust. He made us for himself. He gave us breath, and I just want to praise him. I want to use my breath to praise him.

Praise you, Lord. We thank you for this time together. Thank you for filling us. Thank you that you created us. You thought us up, and you don’t leave us in this world to do life on our own. You give us your Holy Spirit and you breathe new life into us. Lord, we stand in awe of you. We use every breath to give you praise. We love you back. It’s in Jesus’ name. Amen.
