And you know that God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. Then Jesus went around doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.
Wow. Luke, the writer of the Book of Acts packed a whole lot of hope and power into one verse. That was Acts 10:38. Yeah. We are kicking off today’s episode of the Bible for Busy People with those powerful words. I’m Erica, your host, and it’s such a privilege to talk with you about what Jesus did in this world when he was here. We talked about how he hung out with sinners and he showed them what God’s love looked like. He’s still showing us through his Word. And we talked about how Jesus rested. He made time to make sure he was physically recharged, mentally reset, and spiritually replenished. And oh, how I want to follow his example.
Well, today we’re going to talk about the miracles that Jesus did, and he did many. As a matter of fact, John writes in his gospel, chapter 21, verse 25,
Jesus also did many other things. If they were all written down, I suppose the whole world could not contain the books that would be written.
So, as I sat down today and thought about which miracle I wanted to cover, one stood out to me and for a while I pitched a tent on how Jesus turned the water into wine. And for a little bit I thought about talking about how He walked on water and how that just increased the faith of the disciples. They thought they were seeing a ghost walking on the sea of Galilee, but it was the Lord. And remember Peter said, let me come out to you. Oh, there’s just so many good stories in the Bible and stick with me because throughout the year we’re going to cover so many more things that Jesus did. And by the way, next time we’re going to talk about how Jesus raised the dead. Wow. Talk about a miracle of miracles, right? But for today, I want to camp out on one of the smaller miracles. Let’s see what the Lord has to say to us today. In Mark chapter 10, beginning in verse 46.
Then they reached Jericho, and as Jesus and his disciples left town, a large crowd followed him. A blind beggar named Bartimaeus (son of Timaeus) was sitting beside the road. 47 When Bartimaeus heard that Jesus of Nazareth was nearby, he began to shout, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” 48 “Be quiet!” many of the people yelled at him. But he only shouted louder, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” 49 When Jesus heard him, he stopped and said, “Tell him to come here.” So they called the blind man. “Cheer up,” they said. “Come on, he’s calling you!” 50 Bartimaeus threw aside his coat, jumped up, and came to Jesus. 51 “What do you want me to do for you?” Jesus asked. “My Rabbi,” the blind man said, “I want to see!” 52 And Jesus said to him, “Go, for your faith has healed you.” Instantly the man could see, and he followed Jesus down the road.
This story is very special to me, especially today, because my father got news that he is in the beginning stages of macular degeneration, the disease that stole his father’s eyesight. And I can only imagine what he must be feeling and going through today, thinking about the future. And this story is actually one of my dad’s favorites. My dad who came to Christ after we prayed for him for like 20 years, our whole family was praying for him to accept the love and forgiveness that Jesus Christ offers each and every one of us. My dad actually now teaches Bible study from time to time. I’ve been at the dining room table where he and my mom host their friends, and the cookies are there and the coffee is brewing, and there’s my dad with his Bible open and his notes on his legal pad. I mean, to me, that is another miracle that Jesus did here in the times in which we live. But my dad really loves this story, and I’m so thankful that Jesus put it on my heart, especially on this day because it reminds me of a couple of things. It reminds me that if the Lord so chooses right now, He can heal my dad’s eyes. And sometimes the Lord says, no or wait, or one day you will be healed completely in heaven. We’re very familiar with this, even though it’s hard sometimes to understand the ways of the Lord. And Isaiah, he tells us, my ways are higher than your ways. My thoughts are higher than your thoughts. And that’s where the trust comes in, right? We have to trust him when we don’t understand.
And so, the other thing that this story reminds me of today, and the Lord in his kindness put this story on my heart. One of my dad’s favorites, like I said on the day when he’s diagnosed with this terrible disease, is that Jesus hears you when you cry out to him. Jesus says, come to me just like he told the crowd, tell Bartimaeus to come here. He wants you to know when you are in need. You can come to him and just like he helped Bartimaeus to see physically, so often, he will help us to see spiritually. To see that he is working good out of the bad in our lives, and that can be a mini miracle every day. If we see through the eyes of Jesus, everything looks different. When we trust him and we lean on him, and we go to him with the things that are pressing on our hearts, He can help us. He can relieve us of those burdens.
Lord Jesus, I just want to ask you for help today. Help us to see things the way you see them. Help us to trust you completely, Lord, for once we were blind, but now we see. We see your goodness in this world. We see and feel your love for us, and we thank you in Jesus’ name, amen.
Till next time, you are really loved.
