Welcome to The Bible for Busy People. I’m Erica Parkerson. This is the place where we meet up to read half a chapter of God’s word together, and remember how loved we are. Jesus extends an amazing invitation to us in the Bible. He says, come to me and I WILL give you rest. This is us RSVPing: Yes!! to that invitation. So take a deep breath and let’s get started.
Today’s episode is called, “Rock Solid”. Yes, Jesus is the foundation you and I can stand on every single day so we can stand firm. The foundation of Christ is rock solid. Okay. We’re gonna be diving into Colossians chapter two today. Paul, the apostle wrote a letter to the Colossians. He didn’t know them personally. He didn’t obviously know you and I personally, but you and I can take these words as if the apostle Paul texted us 2000 years ago, because these words come from God. Paul was like, God’s mailman. So be encouraged today.
We’re about to dive in, but first, you know, I wanna dedicate our time to the Lord. So join me in a little prayer. Father, we come to you right now in the name of Jesus with expectancy, knowing you’re already with us. Woo. Thank you, Lord. Would you open our eyes and our hearts to see and to understand what you would have us to know from your word today? It’s in Jesus’ name we pray, amen.
Okay. I’m super excited to dive into Colossians chapter two. Here we go, Paul writes, “I want you to know how much I have agonized for you and for the church at Laodicea, and for many other believers who have never met me personally. I want them to be encouraged and knit together by strong ties of love. I want them to have complete confidence that they understand God’s mysterious plan, which is Christ himself. In him lie hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. I’m telling you this so no one will deceive you with well crafted arguments, for though I am far away from you, my heart is with you and I rejoice that you are living as you should. And that your faith in Christ is strong.”
And here comes our, our takeaway verse today: “And now just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him.” Listen to this, “Let your roots grow down into him and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught and you will overflow with thankfulness.” I want a strong faith. I wanna overflow with thankfulness, don’t you? “Don’t let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world rather than from Christ, for in Christ lives all the fullness of God in a human body.”
Oh, this is so encouraging. Paul is encouraging you and I to build our lives on Christ. That is a firm foundation, let me tell you! Years ago, my husband and I built a house in North Carolina. Well, WE didn’t. We hired people, experts to build our home. My husband would drive by, usually daily to check on the progress, and thank God Will did that because the builders were actually building the foundation backwards. And if Will, hadn’t caught it, we would’ve been looking at a view of the street and the cars coming down instead of a view of the woods. Will wanted to make sure the foundation was correct, and this is what the apostle Paul is saying here: Build your life on the foundation of Jesus Christ, he is everything we need. He is love, he is hope. God says he is the God of hope, he is love, God is love himself. And if you and I build our lives on the foundation of Jesus Christ, what’s gonna happen? Paul tells us, our faith is going to be strong and we are going to overflow with thankfulness. It makes me think that what you’re doing right now is building a firm foundation, just opening his word and reading it is part of that. Woo. I’m looking forward to the second half of Colossians chapter two. Can’t wait for tomorrow.
