Joy Bombs in the Psalms! | Psalm 27, Matthew 11:28-30, Psalm 36:9

I was telling the Lord that I felt like I was too busy and overwhelmed to record this podcast today. You ever feel just completely overwhelmed? Your to-do list is longer than Santa’s in December, and you’re like, Lord (this was me this morning), “Help!” And I felt like what he put on my heart was that I need to stay close to him. When you’re walking in the light, you walk differently. Don’t walk in your busyness. This is what I do, right? So often I meditate on all of the things that I need to do, and I get caught up in it, almost like a tornado of thoughts. And Jesus is saying, no, no, no, no, no. Come and sit in my presence. Sit in the light and I’m going to show you that it’s going to be okay. So, let’s read these last couple of verses together as we wrap up our light series this week.

I had a light bulb go off this morning as I was thinking about recording this podcast today, and I’ll share that at the end of our time together. But first, I’m Erica welcoming you to the Bible for Busy People. Boy, I sure have enjoyed studying light with you this week. Isn’t it amazing to think that Jesus, the light of the world, invites us to be the light too? To share hope and joy and peace and light in this dark world? What a privilege that is and how do we do it? By keeping close to him, right? That’s the one thing that has been burned into my brain and heart this week. Stay close to him. More on that in a moment. But first, it’s Friday. It’s time for Joy Bombs in the Psalms, so join me in the middle of your Bible, Psalm 27. We’re going to pick it up in verse one.

The Lord is my light and my salvation. So why should I be afraid? The Lord is my fortress protecting me from danger. So why should I tremble? When evil people come to devour me, when my enemies and foes attack me, they will stumble and fall. Though a mighty army surrounds me. My heart will not be afraid. Even if I am attacked, I will remain confident. The one thing I ask of the Lord, the thing I seek most is to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, delighting in the Lord’s perfections and meditating in his temple, for he will conceal me there. When troubles come, he will hide me in his sanctuary, he will place me out of reach on a high rock. Then I will hold my head high above my enemies who surround me. at his sanctuary, I will offer sacrifices with shouts of joy, singing and praising the Lord with music.Hear me as I pray. Oh Lord, be merciful and answer me. My heart has heard you say, come and talk with me.

That’s keeping close to the light of the world and my heart responds, Lord, I am coming. Do not turn your back on me. Do not reject your servant in anger. You have always been my helper. Don’t leave me now. Don’t abandon me, oh God of my salvation. Even if my father and mother abandoned me, the Lord will hold me close. Teach me how to live. Oh Lord, lead me along the right path for my enemies are waiting for me. Do not let me fall into their hands, for they accuse me of things I’ve never done with every breath they threaten me with violence. This is my favorite part.

Yet I am confident I will see the Lord’s goodness while I am here in the land of the living. Wait patiently for the Lord. Be brave and courageous. Yes, wait patiently for the Lord.

When you’re waiting, sometimes it feels like you’re in the dark, but remember whatever waiting room you’re sitting in today, when the light of the world is with you, it’s not as dark as you might think. He’s there to illuminate the fact that you are going to see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. You can be confident in that. Like David The Psalmist who wrote this beautiful psalm.

Okay, I promised you in the beginning that I would share a little light bulb moment that went off for me this morning. I want to turn to Matthew chapter 11, verse 28 with you, because here’s what happened. I was telling the Lord that I felt like I was too busy and overwhelmed to record this podcast today. You ever feel like that? Just completely overwhelmed? Your to-do list is longer than Santa’s in December, and you’re like, Lord, this was me this morning, help! And I felt like what he put on my heart was that I need to stay close to him. Again, Matthew chapter 11, beginning in verse 28.

Are you tired, worn out, burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me. Watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.

That’s the message version of Matthew chapter 11, verse 28 to 30. Don’t you want to live like that? Don’t you want to live freely and lightly? You and I can when we keep company with Jesus. When we keep company with the light of the world. And you are doing that right now. I’m doing that right now, so let’s keep it up. Let’s keep walking with Jesus, the light of the world together. Walt Whitman the great poet, I think he was a poet, right? He said, keep your face always toward the sun and the shadows will fall behind you. Of course, he meant the sun that shines in the sky, but I think it works to say, keep your face always toward the son; The Son of God, Jesus, and the shadows will fall behind you. Let’s keep doing this together. Let’s keep studying the Bible and keeping in the light. Till next time, remember, you are really loved.
