Harvest Takeaway Verse: Proverbs 6:6-8

Go to the ant, you sluggard;  consider its ways and be wise! It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, Yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest.

Hello and welcome to the Bible for Busy People. I’m Erica and we are right in the middle of a harvest series. We’re exploring what God’s word has to say about harvest time, and I’m feeling nice and cozy with my French roast coffee in this wonderful fall shawl, as I like to call it. Today we’re gonna talk about ants.

Now this is nuts, but the Book of Proverbs actually talks about ants. Don’t tell my mom, cuz I remember when we were kids and ants would get in the kitchen sometimes in our apartment in New York and that did not make her happy. And I gotta tell you, the only ants I like are from the Pixar movie, A Bugs Life.

Have you ever seen it? They make ants lovable. I don’t know how they do it, but today we are gonna turn to Proverbs, chapter six. It’s in the middle of your Bible, and see what the, what the Bible has to say about this tiny little creature, because little by little they get it done. We’re picking it up in Proverbs chapter six, verse six:

Take a lesson from the ants. You lazy bones, learn from their ways and become wise. There’s our takeaway verse Straight out the gate, though they have no prints or governor or ruler to make them work. They labor hard all summer, gathering food for the winter, but you lazy bones, how long will you sleep? When will you wake up? A little extra sleep, a little more slumber. A little folding of the hands to rest, then poverty will pounce on you like a bandit. Scarcity will attack you like an armed robber.

So, here’s what I’m hearing about ants. They get the harvest. They actually work hard all summer. The Bible is telling us right here, to gather food for the winter and they work together. One thing about ants that’s really cool is they work really well as a team. I saved these facts on my phone because I thought they were so cool. Ants can dig huge nests together. They can use their bodies to form rafts or bridges. They can sew leaves together and again, together they can feed up to 306 million members of their colony. So, lesson number one from the ant, they work together as a team to do all of these things, including bringing the harvest. The next thing is an ant colony needs all the different jobs in order to work. So, the queen, can’t collect food, she has to lay the eggs and make the babies, right?

So, she needs the workers. The workers can’t have babies, so they need the queen. And it’s just such a stark reminder to me that as you and I work as a team in our families, in our jobs, that we each have a specific role that God has given us to fulfill. And little by little. The big things get done. So that’s a few things we can learn from the tiny little ant today.

Don’t you love that the Bible talks about everything and that we can learn so much? All right. Can’t wait till next time. We’ll talk more about what the Bible has to say, about the harvest. Till then, remember, you are loved. Thank you so much for listening to the Bible for busy people.
